Cliffside Coal Plant Rally

The League of Women Voters of North Carolina (LWVNC) is joining the Stop Cliffside Campaign partners in their Call to Conscience–Cliffside Climate Action rally in Charlotte on April 20, 2009, to protest the building of Duke Energy’s proposed coal-fired powerplant in Rutherford County.

Appalachian Mountains Preservation Act

Rep. Pricey Harrison from Guilford County will introduce a bill to be titled:
AN ACT AN ACT TO PRESERVE THE APPALACHIAN MOUNTAINS BY PROHIBITING ELECTRIC PUBLIC UTILITIES THAT OPERATE COAL-FIRED GENERATING UNITS LOCATED IN NORTH CAROLINA FROM PURCHASING OR USING COAL THAT IS EXTRACTED USING MOUNTAINTOP REMOVAL COAL MINING. This bill would amend Chapter 62 of the General Statutes by adding a new article called "Article 5B. Appalachian Mountains Preservation Act." Rep. Harrison held a news conference Feb. 26 to announce this bill.

The League of North Carolina supports this bill. See Coal - The
Great Hope, the False Promise or a Disaster in the Making?
