LWV of Lower Cape FearWe have so far held or assisted with three candidate forums and are scheduled for another three in the next week or two. We sponsored and Issues Forum on our Sewer problems locally and had a good attendance. We are sponsoring another Issues Seminar concerning landfills and their repercussions on the environment in early November. (Report from Audrey Albrecht) LWV of Pitt CountyPlease report that our League had a very successful Candidates Forum last evening (10/26/05) at one of our local High Schools. The Young Democrats and Young Republicans of the High School and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority (public service, minority women) all co-sponsored with the League and the students did lots of the work like time-keeping, errands, etc. It was great for us to have the assistance! Plus it got our attendance up 'cause you know their teachers made them come!! I highly recommend other Leagues to partner with our youth in EVERYTHING!!! We even got 2 new student members last night to join the League! YEA!!! (Report from Dede Carney) LWV of Moore CountyThe fall is always a very busy time for the League of Moore County. Our monthly luncheons have attracted lots of League members as well as community people. So for we had a speaker from the Coalition for Human Care (to whom we donated bags and bags of canned goods) as well as a Lieutenant Colonel from the Reconstruction Team in Afghanistan address the group. We held two candidate local forums that over 100 citizens attended and one that was covered by a local paper. We held the first of our four Mixed Paper Recycling days, in fact breaking a record on the paper collected. We registered voters and handed out our Directory of Public Officials in two community events. We are still collecting money raised by selling ‘tickets’ to the Belks’ Charity Days as our first fundraiser. In addition, our regular League activities continued- we observe the County Commissioners and the Board of Ed meetings, as well as two local government meetings. Our study committees have met- the Issues Committee (which gives a short report each luncheon meeting) Equal Representation Study and County Poverty and Children Study. (Report from Ann Torok, Pres. Moore County LWV) LWV of Wake CountyThe LWV-Wake County had a busy fall with local and school board elections. We:
The educations, environment, and housing committees are actively pursuing a variety of topics including year-round high schools, clean water and affordable housing. In addition several members are actively involved in the 10-Year Plan to End Homelessness. Two outstanding speakers are being featured for the Friday Unit meetings this fall:
