Running & Winning graphic

The League of Women Voters of Wake County presented their second Running & Winning Workshop on Saturday, March 28, 2009, at St. Mary's School, Raleigh, North Carolina.

This interactive workshop is designed to give young women in high school and college the opportunity to explore public service as a career. During the session, participants met with state and local women office holders and explored their own leadership abilities.

Running and Winning Workshop 2007

The League of Women Voters of Wake County, Peace College, and the North Carolina Center for Women in Public Service, along with Meredith College, NC State Women’s Center, Saint Augustine’s College and Shaw University sponsored this area’s first Running & Winning Workshop on Saturday, November 3, 2007, at Peace College in Raleigh.

We believe that one way to reach greater representational parity for women is to develop leadership potential in our young women. The Running & Winning Workshop is non-partisan and brings together young women from several high schools and colleges in Wake County for an active political experience. Working in small groups with students from other schools, they interview local and state female elected officials, learning about their experiences in seeking and holding public office. Afterwards, each small group plans a mock campaign by analyzing issues, designing publicity, and writing and delivering a campaign speech. Trained facilitators guide the small groups in interviewing the politicians and in role-playing and cooperative learning to plan the mock campaign. This program is designed for young women early in their leadership development -- specifically targeting high school seniors and college first years and sophomores -- in order to give a transforming experience that allows them to do things they haven't thought they were capable of doing before.
