Citizen Education Foundation

PURPOSE OF THE ORGANIZATION

The Citizen Education Foundation is the 501 (c) (3) branch of the League of Women Voters of North Carolina. One of several criteria for such an organization is that it is operated solely for education activities. These may include public discussion groups, forums, panels, lectures, printed materials, video tapes or other similar projects.

CEF projects must present fair, objective, non-partisan information to the general public. Projects cannot advocate a particular position or legislation or urge any action to affect legislation. The project cannot involve work with political parties or candidates for office, other than non-partisan voter service activities.

The CEF has established sub-accounts for each local league in the state of North Carolina. Local leagues wishing to use funds on deposit must submit project requests for review and approval prior to initiation of the project. Contributions to local and state CEF accounts come from foundations such as the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation, from individuals, from businesses and from other good government organizations. These contributions help defray expenses for educational activities such as leadership development training, education on community issues and materials designed to promote an open and fair voting process. Local leagues have been involved in a variety of projects, including course presentations of Civics 101, 102 and 103 for communities, citizen guides to local government, a public housing scholarship fund and various candidate forums and surveys.

Officers of the CEF are the same as those of the League of Women Voters of North Carolina.

Contributions to LWVNC CEF or any local League's CEF are welcomed from League members and the public. These contributions are tax deductible and earmarked for educational activities only.
